My Review:

This story has fascinated me and thrilled me from the first page. It brings together many different genres: there are elements of magic, there are beautiful love stories and there are many historical references. It's a novel about women: the protagonists are five strong women but also vulnerable to whom the war has taken away their loves.
The whole world was shocked by the attack on Pearl Harbor, for everyone life has changed irreversibly. Even a small town lost in New Mexico has suffered the serious effects of this heinous act of war. Most of the men leave for the war but their women are hopeful: their city has a fountain whose water is magical, they will come home safe and sound.  But when the terrible news of the deaths begin to arrive, hope abandons quickly everyone.
It 's a very exciting novel, sometimes very moving, written beautifully well. The pace is compelling and pressing, the descriptions are lovable and charming. The characters are well developed and very credible, it is easy to empathize with them.
I recommend it to anyone who wants to read a historical novel deep and exciting.

EXCERPT:

Then the boys, all forty-three of them, moved forward. Billy was the only hold out of the seniors and older boys. He’d promised me he wouldn’t go willingly, though he prepared me for the fact they might draft him.

Once the parade was underway, Liv came up to us. “Don’t they look handsome?”

I nodded but held tight to Billy’s hand. Then Billy jerked away in a way he never did before. My breath caught when as the recruits walked by, he stepped into the street, falling into step with the others.

I stared at him, and then narrowed my eyes at Liv. “Did you put him up to this?”
“No. I’m sure I don’t know what he’s doing.” Her open mouth showed she was just as shocked as I was.

A cheer went up from the crowd.

I returned my attention to the boys and swallowed hard. My Billy made his decision that day. I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen to us, to our plans. “He belongs there with them.”

Liv drew me close. “It’ll be all right.”

They continued down the street stopping at the Council and saluting. I nodded but didn’t answer. The sun warmed the chilled air. I wondered if I would ever feel warm again. If Billy went into the service, what would I do? It was a thought that never left me.
