EXCERPT: Her brother’s footsteps sounded down the hall. “You about ready to go?” Bree gulped, trapped in the mental mud of her mind. The part that held memories of her terrorized years. “Almost.” If the clock Mom gave her were still on the shelf, Bree would hear it in the quiet moment. The absence of it held a significance all its own. One she wouldn’t focus on then. “Come here, sis.” Braden draped an arm around her shoulder, pulling her in for a sideways hug. Bree hugged him back and stepped away before she could cry, squeezing her eyes shut to trap the tears. Tears from leaving the home she loved. Leaving the only sibling she had. Leaving her very own kids. “I wish there was a better way to ensure your safety.” His words were laced with a sense of burden that put a rock in Bree’s gut. “We just don’t know what Carl Ronsberg is capable of.” He glared down at the floor. “Or maybe we do.” Or maybe we do… Four words. Four words that – when used separately – were as harmless as a stray kitten. But when used with that name they were enough to shoot ice through her spine. Carl Ronsberg – the stalker she’d help put behind bars. The stalker who’d be out in just fourteen days.

EXCERPT: Say something, an inner voice pled. “Thanks for bringing up my things,” she blurted. Greyson gave her a subtle nod and made for the stairs. He got to the landing, took two more steps, and then paused to look up at her where she stood in the doorway, paralyzed. “Bree?” Tingling warmth gushed through her chest at the sound of her name in his deep, raspy voice. “Mmm?” His eyes locked on hers, and Bree was certain – by the look on his face, the very air about him – that if Greyson Law wanted to own the world and everyone in it, he could. He lifted his chin, squaring his face with hers. “I’m going to see that you’re safe.”

EXCERPT: “You must kiss her, Greyson,” came Mila’s voice. “It’s tradition.” Through slats in the bars supporting their feet, he caught sight of Mila and her husband looking over their shoulders. “Go get ‘em, tiger,” Travis hollered. Bree pulled away slightly, straightening as his gaze turned to her. Mila and Travis joined in. “Kiss. Kiss. Kiss.” The carnival lights did wonders for Bree’s already brilliant face. Glowing skin. Flushed cheeks. And an encouraging look in her eye that caused his belly to burn hotter with desire. Greyson brought a hand to her neck, delicate and warm, keeping his gaze on her as he leaned in. With the warmth of her breath filling the space between them, Greyson paused to lift a brow. A silent question. Was she okay with this?

EXCERPT: “I’m sorry you’re worried over your brother. I wish there was something I could do.” Greyson pulled off his ball cap, ran a hand through his hair, and took a step toward her. “You do?” “Yes,” she said with a giggle. Bree’s gaze followed the path of his hat as he plunked it onto a notepad at the table. He smiled at the way she glanced down at his feet, watching as he took another step closer, and then another. “What do you have in mind?” There went that dimple, sinking right into that rosy cheek of hers. She was helping already. She took a step back. “I don’t have anything in mind.” “Fair enough,” he said, taking one final step. Bree was against the counter now, the light above the nearby table grazing just parts of her lovely face. “I’m thinking of a way you can help right now.” He slipped one hand along her delicate neck, her skin slightly cool and damp from the rain, and caught hints of her floral perfume. She grinned, her gaze darting to the floor before settling back on him. “Hmm.”
